Forum for Applied Knowledge in Practice

MRCPCH AKP Forum

Applied Knowledge in Practice is about safe clinical judgement. Discuss diagnosis, investigations, management and exam-style decision-making.

Welcome to the AKP Forum

This page is for candidates preparing for the MRCPCH Applied Knowledge in Practice exam. AKP tests how you use paediatric knowledge in real clinical situations.

Simple aim: Think like a safe paediatric doctor — assess the child, recognise risk, choose sensible investigations and make a safe management plan.

High-Yield AKP Areas

Diagnosis

Recognising key symptoms, differential diagnoses and red flags in paediatrics.

Investigations

Choosing useful tests, interpreting results and avoiding unnecessary investigations.

Management

Safe treatment plans, escalation, follow-up and multidisciplinary care.

Emergency Scenarios

Sepsis, seizures, respiratory distress, dehydration, safeguarding and acute illness.

How to Approach AKP Questions

1. Identify the Main Problem

Read the question carefully and decide what the child’s key clinical problem is.

2. Look for Red Flags

Always look for sepsis, shock, safeguarding concerns, airway/breathing problems and neurological compromise.

3. Choose Safe Investigations

Pick tests that answer the clinical question. Do not over-investigate if the diagnosis is clear.

4. Make a Safe Plan

Think about immediate treatment, escalation, communication, discharge safety and follow-up.

Important: AKP often tests safe judgement. The most clever answer is not always the safest answer.
